Fleda Brown, former poet laureate, will be at Dog Ears Books on Friday, June 22

Fleda Brown, former poet laureate of Delaware, who grew up spending summers in northern Michigan and who now makes her home in Traverse City, will be at Dog Ears Books this coming Friday, June 22. You’ll have plenty of time for your garden work and to take your morning walk before her 2 pm bookstore event, and you’ll be rested and refreshed to get your picnic together for the first evening of Music in the Park in Northport, with the Bill Sears Quartet.
Fleda will read from her book of beautiful memoir essays and maybe–I hope!–from Loon Cry, a book of her poems published by the Watershed Council. Here’s a preview to
tempt you, the beginning of one of Fleda’s poems, “If I Were a Swan”–
I would ride high
above my own white
weight. I would ride
through the lightening
of the earth
and the darkening
stillness and turbulence
coming on in the core
of me, and spreading
to the hard rain,
to the dazzle.
There’s more to this poem. I think I’ll make a special request that Fleda read this one for sure on Friday. Hope you will be able to join us!
